Colombian authorities are investigating the death of 13 people amid a battle allegedly involving dissidents of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) in the Nari?o department, in southwestern Colombia.
According to reports from the community, FARC dissidents were celebrating a birthday when the ELN attacked them.
The dispute between FARC’s dissidents and the ELN aims at controlling the areas where the FARC former guerrilla group once operated. FARC turned into a political party as part of a peace agreement with the Colombian government reached in November last year.
A report released last week by the Peace and Reconciliation Foundation and other social organizations to mark the first anniversary of the peace agreement warned that the Colombian post-conflict “is at risk” for the persistence of violence and delays in the implementation of actions required by the deal between the government and the former guerrilla.
The report also warns that “15 groups of deserters in 43 municipalities are active in the whole country”, gathering around 700 guerrillas, or 7 percent of the original contingent.
