It really shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that Sony Picture’s “The Interview” did as well as it did.  The amount of free publicity which hemorrhaged into patriotic pressure is simply unprecedented.  Since its Christmas release, “The Interview” has grossed close to $18 million already.  The chief source of these sales came from the internet, after Sony made the film available for purchase or short-term viewing on Youtube among other places.  While Apple has since put “The Interview” in iTunes, Google’s Youtube has had tremendous success in sales so far, and Apple’s late agreement to offer the film could prove too late to be profitable.

An unwelcome surprise for Facebook users came this year with a shockingly unpopular ‘Year in Review.’  While intended to provide a thoughtful reminiscence of the past year for reflection, Facebook has been under attack after the media got wind of specific users’ unfortunate encounters with the option, including those who suffered losses in their families.  While not caused with any specific malice, Facebook has been been suffering in the media due to constant attention drawn to unfortunate cases of familial loss.
