Asian shares shrugged off early losses as crude oil prices pulled away from their overnight lows, while the Australian Dollar grabbed the spotlight and surged after a much stronger-than-expected employment report.
U.S. stocks finished lower on Wednesday after investors sold oil companies and dumped brick-and-mortar retailers after a disappointing forecast from Macy’s.
All three major U.S. indexes closed 0.32 percent weaker: the Dow Jones industrial average lost 55.99 points to end at 17,702.22, while the S&P 500 fell 6.72 points to 2,075. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 16.22 points to close at 5,067.02.

FX

The Dollar edged up to 122.94 Yen against its Japanese counterpart, below the 2.5 month high of 123.60 touched earlier this week. The Euro added about 0.2 percent to $1.0769, recovering from this week’s nearly seven-month low of $1.0674. The Australian Dollar jumped three-quarters of a U.S. cent to $0.7155, and was last up 1.1 percent at $0.7139.

Commodities

U.S. crude futures were at $43.19 a barrel at 0605 GMT, up 26 cents from Wednesday when prices tumbled 3 percent on the back of high production, rising U.S. stocks and an economic slowdown in Asia. Internationally traded Brent crude futures were at $46.05 a barrel, up 24 cents following a 3.4 percent fall the previous day.

Equities

Rolls Royce cut its profits forecast for the 4th time in a year causing the stock to drop 19% on the open at 547.25. The stock is currently not doing much better, now trading down by 18.07%.

We have both Mario Draghi and Janet Yellen speaking today. Yesterday the ECB President spoke at the Bank of England Open Forum about the European Union and the need for further institutional integration. Fed Chair Yellen is speaking publicly for the first time since the impressive non-farm numbers that came in at 271k (90k above expectation) and could give a further insight regarding a potential December rate hike.

Today Mario Draghi spoke at 8.30 and will speak again at 10.30 GMT; Janet Yellen is due to speak at the American market open, which is at 14:30 GMT.
