European markets have opened mostly lower today, tracking a rout in the US markets on Friday and a sell-off in Asia this morning as worries mounted that the US Federal Reserve might press on with its planned programme of stimulus reduction this week.

Closer home, the Bank of England Policymaker Martin Weale stated that the Bank of England might maintain its record low interest rates for some more time, even after a steep fall in unemployment.
