European markets have opened mixed today, as comments by US Federal Reserve officials hinting at a possible tapering of stimulus in October were offset by news that German Chancellor Angela Merkel won a third term in office in elections over the weekend.

A survey by Markit Economics showed that the headline household finance index in the UK stood at 40.8, unchanged from August. With no major release of domestic economic data later in the day, investors would keep a close eye on manufacturing and services PMI data from the Eurozone.
