Today’s Hot Assets: EUR, USD, JPY
U.S. stocks finished lower after weak data lowered sentiment. New Home Sales came out at 384,000, its lowest figure since July. Focus turned to company earnings, including Apple and Facebook which were coming out after the closing bell. At session close the S&P 500 was 0.22% lower and the Dow Jones was 0.08% lower. Asian stocks were mixed. The Hang Seng gained 0.24% but the Nikkei lost 0.97% as auto stocks declined and the Yen gained against the U.S. Dollar which was trading at ¥102.46 per dollar, compared with ¥102.53 late Wednesday. European markets started the day higher ahead of data later in the day and a speech from Draghi scheduled for 9am GMT.
WTI Crude declined to a two week low after the EIA reported an increase in inventories. Inventories actually climbed to their highest level on record, standing at 3.524M. Traders should remain focused on the tension in Ukraine as there are still worries supply from Russia, the biggest energy exporter, could be disrupted. Gold is trading choppy in light trade despite weaker U.S. data and weakness in equities. Traders should focus on Core Durable Goods Orders which will be released from the U.S. at 12.30pm GMT.

09.00 GMT: EUR – ECB President Draghi Speaks – Due to speak at the “De Nederlandsche Bank 200 years: Central Banking in the Next Two Decades” conference, in Amsterdam
12.30 GMT: USD – Core Durable Goods Orders – measures the change in the total value of new orders for long lasting manufactured goods, excluding transportation items.
12.30 GMT: USD – Initial Jobless Claims – measures the number of individuals who filed for unemployment insurance for the first time during the past week
23.30 GMT: JPY – National Core CPI – measures the change in the price of goods and services purchased by consumers, excluding fresh food.
23.30 GMT: JPY – Tokyo Core CPI – measures the change in the price of goods and services purchased by consumers in Tokyo, excluding fresh food.
