RBS has reported a pre-tax profit of £1.6 billion for the first quarter of 2014, beating expectations and leading to a 10% rise in share price.

US Pharmaceutical firm Pfizer has raised its bid for AstraZeneca to $106 billion (£63 billion), at £50 a share.

The Eurozone PMI rose from 53.0 in March to 53.4 in April, with Germany, Spain, Italy and Ireland showing growth, but France still struggling. Meanwhile, the UK Construction PMI for April was down to 60.8 from 62.5 in March, though still keeping well above the 50 figure indicating growth.

Other Macroeconomic figures out today include the Euro-Zone unemployment rate out later this morning and the US Nonfarm Payrolls/Unemployment data out early this afternoon.
