Former MPC and senior economic advisor to PwC, Andrew Sentance says the Bank of England needs to start raising rates or risk being behind the curve and believes that ‘MPC members need to put votes where their mouths are’. Mr Sentance thinks the UK economy will continue to perform reasonably well this year, with slower growth of around 2-2.5% in 2015 and 2016.
IG’s Brenda Kelly says the pound is on a firmer footing than the US dollar, with the MPC more likely to tighten policy ahead of the Federal Reserve, which will create additional pound strength. Currently she expects any pullbacks to be around $1.70, and points out that a drop below would be a good buy-in opportunity. Ms Kelly also examines the impact on GBP/EUR and EUR/USD.
