The US dollar regained its ground versus the Japanese yen and the euro, but stayed lower versus major counterparts in relatively muted afternoon Thursday.

Investors were not eager to place directional bets before Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen’s speech before the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s conference on economic opportunity Friday.

“The market is catching its breath and waiting to see what will happen in Asia and European trade [Friday] and [awaiting] Yellen’s speech tomorrow,” said Ken Willis, Currency Strategist at USForex.

The greenback traded at $1.2804 Thursday afternoon, from Wednesday’s $1.2816. Against the British pound, the currency was at $1.6091, previously $1.5989.
