The British pound advanced against the US dollar as Scotland has started voting on whether to conclude its more than three-century-old union with the United Kingdom.

Sterling strengthened versus most of 16 major counterparts as opinion polls showed the Scottish race was too close to call.

The pound added 0.1% to $1.6288 at 7:57 a.m. (London time) after increasing to $1.6358 yesterday, the highest since September 4.

Against the euro, the currency was slightly changed at 79.09 pence per after climbing to 78.81 pence, the firmest level since July 23.
