Nasdaq Inc. is in discussions with different brokers to mount and operate dark pool or private stock trading venues within its data hub.

Nasdaq Executive Vice President and Global Head of Equities Thomas Wittman said the bourse has set up a hosted dark pool called Ocean, which uses their compliance monitoring, operations, and technology.

In the United States, almost 40 brokers operating alternative trading systems contend with 12 public exchanges, including the New York Stock Exchange.

Dark pools have lesser regulatory adherences unlike public exchanges. But recently, they have come under intensified pressure, increasing the expenditures for the companies that oversee them.
