International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde reiterated the institution’s desire to support Greece but believed the nation lacks the necessary reforms to seal a bailout deal with its lenders.

At a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other leaders of global economic organizations, Lagarde stressed discussions on the country’s progress are not heading where it is supposed to be.

The IMF head said the Greek government should ensure debt sustainability in the long run. Investors in the private sector want to ascertain Greece’s future from economic, financial, and monetary perspective.

On the other hand, Merkel emphasized her opposition to writing down Greece’s debt even though her government is still determined to keep the IMF afloat in the talks.
