Germany’s prosecutors are awaited to decide whether they will launch a formal probe related to manipulated emissions test of Volkswagen AG vehicles.

Attorney Klaus Ziehe said prosecutors in Braunschweig have begun initial investigations into whether a criminal act was committed when the automaker released the rigged data. He added a probe will be opened if VW violated the law.

The carmaker admitted it understated fuel consumption and emissions of carbon dioxide for around 800,000 cars, on top of not adhering to nitrogen oxides emissions standards with millions of vehicles.

VW refused to comment.
