The euro plunged on Wednesday after Greece missed the June 30 deadline for repaying the International Monetary Fund, making it the first developed nation to be in arrears to the institution.

IMF confirmed the Greek government’s failure to repay €1.5 billion. Spokesperson Gerry Rice said the country asked for a last-minute extension, but the board will consider it in time.

Against the US dollar and the Japanese yen, the greenback closed at $1.1128 and ¥136.38, respectively.

The market thought the worst scenario can be evaded and “Greece will accept the bailout after the referendum,” said Takako Masai, Head of Market Research at Shinsei Bank.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel dismissed the idea of additional negotiations with Greece until after Sunday’s referendum.
