China’s Finance Minister Lou Jiwei condemned US presidential contender Donald Trump over his proposed trade policies towards the country.

The business magnate, who previously said China violated global trade rules, suggested levying up to 45% tariffs on the Asian country to pressure it to modify its rules encompassing trade.

But Lou countered such a tariff would breach the World Trade Organization regulations, saying the proposal won’t accord the world’s most powerful economy distinction to the United States.

Lou said Americans had to recognize the two countries depend on each other in terms of economy.
