The British pound ascended to its highest in a week Friday, on a likelihood David Cameron’s Conservatives could remain in the office.

Considered the most closely fought election in a generation, an exit poll implied the possibility of a status quo.

Against the US dollar, sterling leaped to $1.5448 from about $1.5245. It also stood at 72.77 British pence per euro from 74.85 British pence.

The margins are really close and actual outcomes may differ from the exit polling. We “expect the GBP to remain vulnerable through the process,” according to analysts at BNP Paribas.
