On Wednesday, at a conference of the European Central Bank, the head of the Fed again indicated that he considers it possible to further tighten the monetary policy of the central bank. He also noted that the regulator has not yet made a decision on changing the key rate at the next meeting.
Investors are also evaluating the Wall Street Journal report, citing sources that the administration of US President Joe Biden is considering imposing new restrictions on the export of chips and cloud services to China used for artificial intelligence technologies.
At the close on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones fell 0.22%, the S&P 500 index fell 0.04%, the NASDAQ Composite index rose 0.27%.
Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) was the top performer in the Dow Jones Index today, up 3.35 points or 1.60% to close at 212.17. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) rose 0.44 points or 1.54% to close at 29.08. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) rose 1.59 points or 0.95% to close at 169.78.
The leaders of the decline were The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which shed 4.22 points or 2.45% to end the session at 168.37. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 7.23 points or 2.30% to close at 306.51, while UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) was down 8.11 points or 1 .68%) and finished trading at 474.45.
Leading gainers among the components of the S&P 500 in today’s trading were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL), which rose 8.84% to 17.30, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH), which gained 7, 61% to close at 21.08, and Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY), which rose 4.27% to close at 33.20.
The leaders of the decline General Mills Inc (NYSE:GIS), which shed 5.17% to close at 76.72. Shares of Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) shed 4.50% to end the session at 216.86. Hershey Co (NYSE:HSY) was down 3.97% to 249.59.
The leading gainers among the components of the NASDAQ Composite in today’s trading were Minerva Neurosciences Inc (NASDAQ:NERV), which rose 69.27% to 10.19, Knightscope Inc (NASDAQ:KSCP), which gained 52.15%. , to close at 0.70, and Centogene B V (NASDAQ:CNTG), which rose 33.90% to close at 1.58.
The leaders of the decline were American Rebel Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AREB), which shed 35.45% to close at 3.55. Shares of Powerbridge Technologies Co Ltd (NASDAQ:PBTS) shed 33.77% to end the session at 1.00. Trxade Group Inc (NASDAQ:MEDS) dropped 27.56% to 10.75.
On the New York Stock Exchange, the number of securities that rose in price (1575) exceeded the number of those that closed in the red (1370), while quotes of 94 shares remained virtually unchanged. On the NASDAQ stock exchange, 1833 companies rose in price, 1680 fell, and 165 remained at the level of the previous close.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which is based on S&P 500 options trading, fell 2.26% to 13.43.
Gold futures for August delivery lost 0.28%, or 5.35, to hit $1.00 a troy ounce. In other commodities, WTI crude for August delivery rose 2.13%, or 1.44, to $69.14 a barrel. Brent oil futures for September delivery rose 1.77%, or 1.28, to $73.79 a barrel.
Meanwhile, in the Forex market, the EUR/USD pair remained unchanged 0.41% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.28% to hit 144.48.
Futures on the USD index rose 0.50% to 102.64.
