Investors also paid attention to macrostatistics. The number of initial claims for unemployment benefits in the US for the week ending May 6th increased by 22,000 from the previous week’s figure, to 264,000. Analysts had expected the figure to increase only to 245,000.
At the time of closing on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones fell by 0.66%, the S&P 500 index fell by 0.17%, and the NASDAQ Composite index rose by 0.18%.
The biggest gainers among the components of the Dow Jones index at the end of today’s trading were shares of Coca-Cola Co (NYSE: KO), which rose by 0.36 points (0.57%), closing at 63.86. Boeing Co (NYSE: BA) shares rose by 1.00 point (0.50%), ending the trading at 201.84. Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) shares increased in price by 0.57 points (0.37%), closing at 153.12.
The least gainers were shares of Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS), which fell by 8.83 points (8.73%), ending the session at 92.31. Shares of Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) rose by 1.11 points (3.70%), closing at 28.86, while Dow Inc (NYSE: DOW) decreased in price by 1.11 points (2.08%) and ended the trading at 52.34.
The biggest gainers among the components of the S&P 500 index at the end of today’s trading were shares of STERIS plc (NYSE: STE), which rose by 9.85% to 208.04, Tapestry Inc (NYSE: TPR), which gained 8.27%, closing at 40.21, as well as shares of Charles River Laboratories (NYSE: CRL), which increased by 5.07%, ending the session at 195.75.
The least gainers were shares of First Republic Bank (OTC: FRCB), which decreased in price by 9.96%, closing at 0.42. Shares of Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) lost 8.73% and ended the session at 92.31. Shares of SVB Financial Group (OTC: SIVBQ) fell in price by 7.39% to 0.47.
The biggest gainers among the components of the NASDAQ Composite index at the end of today’s trading were shares of Sunshine Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ: SBFM), which rose by 78.11% to 0.90, Polar Power Inc (NASDAQ: POLA), which gained 42.31%, closing at 1.48, and shares of Organogenesis Holdings Inc (NASDAQ: ORGO), which increased by 37.14%, ending the session at 2.88.
The least gainers were shares of Immunitybio Inc (NASDAQ: IBRX), which fell in price by 55.14%, closing at 2.79. Shares of Neptune Wellness Solutions Inc (NASDAQ: NEPT) lost 45.68% and ended the session at 0.22. Shares of Dynatronics Corporation (NASDAQ: DYNT) fell in price by 39.02% to 0.87.
On the New York Stock Exchange, the number of depreciated stocks (1999) exceeded the number of those closing in the green (922), and the quotes of 103 stocks remained virtually unchanged. On the NASDAQ stock exchange, the stocks of 2258 companies fell in price, 1297 rose, and 159 remained at the previous closing level.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which is based on S&P 500 options trading indicators, fell by 0.06% to 16.93.
The futures contract for gold for June delivery lost 0.84%, or 17.15, reaching $2.00 per troy ounce. As for other commodities, the prices of WTI crude oil futures for June delivery fell by 1.57%, or 1.14, to $71.42 per barrel. Brent crude oil futures for July delivery fell by 1.22%, or 0.93, to $75.48 per barrel.
Meanwhile, in the Forex market, the EUR/USD pair fell by 0.58% to 1.09, and the USD/JPY quotes rose by 0.16%, reaching 134.55.
The futures contract for the USD index rose by 0.61% to 101.89.
