Trump’s first press conference as US President-elect • First press conference by Trump as President-elect. Scheduled for late European afternoon. • Will be closely watched for any details regarding his fiscal plans (spending, taxes, etc). • Remember, markets have discounted the “Trump effect” without knowing many specifics. • If he does mention anything new, sharp moves across USD crosses are likely (and equities). • Also, watch out for comments on trade and protectionism. Remarks on China and Mexico could trigger reactions in CNH and MXN as well.
As for the rest of today’s highlights: • UK: Industrial production for Nov. is exp. to have risen. This may support GBP on the news, but given the recent “hard Brexit” rhetoric, any positive reaction could remain short-lived. • Canada: Housing starts for Dec. are exp. to have risen. • Speakers: Besides President-elect Trump, NY Fed President William Dudley and BoE Gov. Mark Carney speak.
