Coming up first at 6 o’clock in the morning is the German GfK Consumer Confidence for October. The Index inched slightly lower in September but it remains near its highest level in years. German Ifo Business Climate for September is out at 8. The Index came in higher than anticipated in August as businesses believe the German economy is strong enough to weather a global crisis. UK Mortgage Approvals for August follow at 8:30. The number of approvals has been growing for seven months straight and now stands at its highest level since early 2014. The closely watched US Durable Goods Orders for August are up next at 12:30 PM GMT. The previous report surprised very much on the upside, recording the strongest growth in more than a year. The high importance weekly update on US Jobless Claims is out at the same time. Initial claims went down by 11 thousand during the week ending September 12, whereas the continuing claims dropped by 26 thousand during the week ending September 5. US New Home Sales for August are scheduled at 2. Sales rebounded in July, partially reversing the unexpected 7.7% drop a month ago. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen will be giving a closely watched speech at 9 o’clock in the evening, when she will be speaking on the rather topical subject of Inflation Dynamics and Monetary Policy at the University of Massachusetts. And the high importance Japanese Consumer Price Index for August concludes the schedule at 11:30. The annual inflation remained low in July, but it should be noted it had little effect on retail sales, which rose 1.6% year-on-year.
