The Index eased in December from the record-high level reached the previous month so it now stands at its second-highest level on record. Coming up next at 12:45 PM GMT is the very anticipated ECB Monetary Policy Statement, and the even more important press conference follows 45 minutes later. President Draghi is bound to face questions whether the current monetary policy is still appropriate now that Euro Zone is in economic expansion and the Common Currency is trending higher. The closely watched weekly update on US Jobless Claims is out at half past 1. Initial claims dropped by 41 thousand during the week ending January 13, reaching their lowest level since 1973, whereas the continuing claims grew by 76 thousand during the week ending January 6. Canadian Retail Sales for November will be available at the same time. October data surprised very much on the upside as sales saw their strongest growth in 9 months. US New Home Sales for December follow at 3. Sales jumped to a 10-year high in November, and gains were recorded across the country. US Leading Index for December is out at the same time. The Index continued growing in November, and the report noted it expects the growth will continue in 2018. And the high importance Japanese December CPI concludes the schedule at 11:30 in the evening. The November data came in somewhat stronger than expected, and the core annual inflation reached a 2-year high.
