All eyes are on the European Central Bank this Thursday, but there are other items on this Economic Calendar which warrant a closer look. I’m Monica Gibson
First up at 9:30 AM is the UK Public Sector Net Borrowing for December. Budget deficit came in smaller than expected in November in light of growing tax revenue.
A highly anticipated market mover comes at quarter to one PM, when the European Central Bank releases its latest Monetary Policy Statement. As usual, President Mario Draghi will hold a press conference 45 minutes later. The announcement of ECB’s QE program is widely expected, but keep in mind that Draghi has a knack for surprising the markets.
The closely watched weekly update of US Jobless Claims is out at half past one. The previous release surprised on the downside as initial claims jumped by 19 thousand during the week ending January 10 although continuing claims dropped by 51 thousand during the week ending January 3.
US House Price Index for November follows at 2 o’clock. The Index returned to growth in October, having stood unchanged the previous month.
The preliminary estimate of Euro Zone Consumer Confidence for January will be available at 3. The Index saw little change in December.
And last up at 1:35 AM is the Japanese Preliminary Manufacturing PMI for January. The Index stood unchanged in December as increased production was offset by falling output prices.
So these are the news events to watch on Thursday, the 22nd of January. Our next Calendar will cover the last day of this trading week, but for now, goodbye.
