No less than the future of the United Kingdom is at stake this Thursday, and that is just one of the potential market movers scheduled for the 18th of September. I’m Doireann McDermott and this is the Economic Calendar.
All eyes will be on Scotland, which will vote on its independence from the United Kingdom. The latest polls show a slight majority for the No camp, but the ultimate outcome still remains uncertain.
Swiss Trade Balance for August is due at 6 o’clock in the morning. Trade surplus grew much more than expected in July, reaching an all-time high.
We stay with Switzerland, as the Swiss National Bank will be releasing its closely watched Monetary Policy Statement at half past seven. The previous statement brought no policy changes.
UK Retail Sales for August are out at 8:30. Sales are expected to pick up speed following lacklustre performance in July, although this release will probably be overshadowed by the Scottish referendum.
A high importance release comes at quarter past nine, when the European Central Bank will be publishing its Targeted Long Term Refinancing Option allotment. The program was announced earlier this month in an attempt to boost the ailing Euro Zone economy.
Coming up next at 12:30 PM GMT are the closely watched US Jobless Claims for September. Initial claims saw an unexpected rise during the week ending September 6 as they went up by 11 thousand while the continuing claims rose by 9 thousand during the week ending August 30.
US Building Permits for August are due at the same time. The previous release showed a pickup in the housing market as the number of permits saw the strongest growth in eight months.
Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index for September will be available at 2 o’clock. The Index surprised on the upside in August, soaring to a three-year high.
And last up at 4:30 AM is the Japanese All Industry Index for July. The Index came in lower than expected in June, partially offsetting a point 6% increase a month ago.
So that concludes the Economic Calendar for Thursday. Our next release will cover the most important news publications for Friday. See you then.
