First, spread betting allows you liquidity while share trading does not. Opening a trade using spread betting is easy and you can close out your position quite easily as well, but stock market trading is more rigid and you cannot close your position or bet before the time you have chosen expires.

Another difference is that in spread betting, there is no difference between short selling and long selling, while the difference is large in share trading. In spread betting, you can gain whether the stock price rises or falls, and your choice is only on which side you want to place your bet. In share trading however, many brokers may not allow you to sell short, some particular shares may not be eligible for short selling at all, and so as to sell short in share trading, you must borrow other shares to sell, which is often difficult.

Spread betting is restricted to only a handful of securities while one can trade liberally on most of the securities available in the market. This is because many financial spread betting companies prefer betting on various stock market indexes and other indexes rather than betting on individual stocks. Share trading here is the alternative if you are interested in investing in individual stocks.

Another difference for spread betting is that you will not receive any dividends when the stock performs well in the market, neither will you have any say in the way the company is run, whereas these are the very benefits that share trading offers you- you become a member of the shareholders and you remain informed on the changes in the company that you have invested in, which places you in a better position to make informed judgments on the running of the company.

Another difference between the 2 is in the amount of time you can remain in the market. By this I mean, in trading, you become a trader even if you buy the shares with the intent of keeping them for an extended period of time, and even in some cases, forever, whereas the time that you can keep your spread bets is limited to 12 months.

Depending on your need, you can choose to trade or bet to make profits from the stock markets.
