The Financial Spread Betting Handbook by Malcolm Pryor (2007)

The theme of this book is to look at how the people who succeed at spread betting do things differently from those that lose. The author uses the analogy of climbing a mountain to explain how if you are serious about trying to make money in this world you need to be disciplined and have the right equipment and resources to ensure success. At base camp you have to learn what to bet on, appropriate time frames, how to operate an account with a spread betting firm, how to control your risk and how to learn from the mistakes made by others. To climb the mountain before setting up a base camp means you are more than likely doomed to failure. The book then moves onto climbing the mountain where it covers strategies to employ such as trend following. If you make it to the top of the mountain you can learn how to set yourselves apart from the losers by covering planning, performance reviews, more risk analysis and much more. Discipline and tactics are what you need to succeed and this book delivers.

Winning Spread Betting Strategies by Malcolm Pryor (2009)

By the same author as the first book, this more recent offering is more restricted in its focus in that it just concentrates on seven strategies. These strategies include such things as ‘Buying Dips’, ‘Selling Rallies’ and ‘Early Bird’. Strategies are included that cover all market types so there will always be a winning strategy you can choose whether the market is on the up, on the way down or just moving sideways. Each strategy is well documented and includes both entry and exit strategies as well as how to best work out the size of your bet. The techniques can be used with many different instruments and the simple step by step layout and many charts make this book a must have for any spread better.

Bets And The City: Sally Nicoll’s Spread Betting Diary by Sally Nicoll

If you are after a light hearted read with some good trading survival tips thrown in, this is the book for you. As the title suggests, this book charts the journey one woman makes as a beginner to the spread betting game. She was overly optimistic as to how easy making money would be but as her rollercoaster ride learning the tricks of the trade progressed, she wised up fast. She started off choosing her spread betting firm based on the colour of their website and ended up writing an online blog for them. The book is very easy to read and combines useful information with hilarious commentary.
