Morning Report: 08.00 London
  • This morning, financial markets continue to stabilise on the back of positive expectations from the latest EU summit. Traders seem to be impressed by the potential for Greece to stay in the euro, helped by Germany leaning more towards a pro growth policy. Whether this will cure the crisis is doubtful, but markets appear to be grateful for a bit of stability.
  • The Australian dollar continues to impress, with the AUD/JPY up 0.24%. The NZD/USD is not far behind, up 0.23%.
  • The US dollar continues to strengthen as traders switch their preferred safe haven from the yen back into the dollar. The USD/JPY is up 0.20%.
  • The euro is yet to join the party though, with the EUR/USD down 0.16% and the EUR/GBP down 0.19%. While there is some relief from euro stability in recent days, it seems that so far markets are sensibly taking a ‘believe it when I see it’ approach.
  • Gold is slipping back slightly, trading down around 0.3%.
Coming up today:
  • This morning we have a whole raft of UK data points from 09.30 including UK CPI, public sector net borrowing, RPI and the latest house price index. Inflation and public sector net borrowing are expected to drop sharply.
  • At 15.00 we have the latest US existing home sales.
Bet Idea:
  • The outlook for the euro is still uncertain to say the least, which makes and upside predictions particularly difficult. However, one thing that does appear apparent is that commodities have been beaten up in recent weeks, potentially pushing them into oversold territory.
  • With the US dollar having run to far in the other direction, the commodity heavy Australian dollar could be a good target for a rebound trade.
This is presented as an idea to stimulate fixed odds financial betting ideas and is not financial advice.  Summary:

By Matt Jarzemsky NEW YORK?The Nasdaq Composite index rose the most since December as hopes of political progress in Greece and talk of government efforts to buoy China's economy trumped a steep decline in Facebook's newly public stock. The tech-heavy index jumped 68.42 points, or 2.5%, to 2847.21, its biggest percent increase since Dec. 20, as Apple rose 5.8% and Google climbed 2.3%.Other benchmarks saw their biggest gains of the month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 135.10 points, or 1.1%, to 12504.48, avoiding a 13th loss in 14 sessions. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index added 20.77 points, or 1.6%, to 1315.99. The materials and information technology sectors led advances, with the latter snapping a 12-day losing streak, its longest ever. Facebook skidded 11% on its second day of trading, pushing it well below its $38 offer price. The stock had opened up 11% in its Friday debut but pared gains to close at $38.23 on Friday."Portfolio managers have a sell trigger that says if the deal breaks the price of the original offering, then they sell it," said Christopher Baggini, senior portfolio manager at Turner Investments in Berwyn, Penn.In Europe, the Stoxx Europe 600 ended up 0.5%, after the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations affirmed over the weekend that they wanted Greece to remain in the euro zone. Weekend polls showed support was growing for the Greek conservatives, which helped ease worries about the political turmoil in the country."The markets were both technically and psychologically oversold and were due for a bounce," said Prudential Financial market strategist Quincy Krosby. "We're getting that bounce, but it's against a backdrop of promise and hope that you're going to hear an announcement from the Europeans and perhaps from the Chinese on more stimulus."Asian markets were also mostly higher after weekend comments from Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao highlighted the importance of adjusting policies to avoid an economic slowdown. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average gained 0.3% and China's Shanghai Composite added 0.2%.Crude-oil futures advanced 1.2% to settle at $92.57 a barrel, while gold futures ticked down 0.2% to finish at $1,588.40 an ounce. The U.S. dollar fell against the euro but rose versus the yen. Cooper Industries jumped 25% after agreeing to be acquired by industrial manufacturer Eaton for $11.8 billion in cash and stock.Lowe's slumped 10% after the home-improvement retailer reported fiscal first-quarter results that topped analyst estimates, according to FactSet Research, but lowered its full-year earnings outlook, citing a cautious view of the economic environment for housing. J.P. Morgan fell 2.9% after suspending its share repurchase program, the latest fallout from the bank's $2-billion-plus losses on derivatives trades. Campbell Soup retreated 1.9% after saying sales for the year will be near the low end of its forecast.Apple's gains came as analysts at Goldman Sachs and Piper Jaffray reiterated recommendations that clients buy the shares.
